Matreshkas on the Old Arbat

Matreshkas on the Old Arbat

The traditional symbol of russian culture is Matreshka (also spelled Matryoshka), which is a set of nesting dolls. Most of them are exclusive author's works made by famous russian artists. Every doll (except the last one, the smallest) consists of two parts. The smaller doll inserts into the bigger one. Thus dolls (sometimes up to 30) can be combined inside the biggest doll - Matreshka. The size of the biggest doll can run up to 15 inches whereas the smallest - 0,1 inches! All dolls are made from natural wood.

Hi Arthur, I got across your blog while surfing for russian landscape pictures. I have always been drawn to Russia because of its interesting story of which much of it has been misunderstood by the rest of the world. After reading your commentary about the war in the Caucasus, I agree that the western media gives Russia no chance at explaining itself as expected. But thanks to your site, people who really want to know the complete picture can have access to the other side of Russia which is often not told. I wish you God's blessing and much success in this year 2009.

Regards, rolly
